about

Since their debut “Steady Now” (2009) and follow-up “In A Low Dark Light” (2012), the award-winning band has enjoyed airplay and chart success in Canada, the US, and Europe for their blend of traditional flavours and college rock influences. After “Ignatius” (2014), a collection built upon a folky acoustic core, Sleepy Driver decided to return to their rock roots. In the basement of singer-songwriter Peter Hicks’ home, the band arranged Hicks’ compositions as a unit and, with the tape rolling, crafted the solid foundation of “Sugar Skull.”

“You can hear the excitement in the performances,” says Hicks. “There is an energy that only comes from playing together.”

The resulting ten songs capture the unique cross-section of styles familiar to fans: the horn-infused “Unpromise” to the rollicking title track, to the reflective ballad “Before We Go Home.” It’s an album guaranteed to please the faithful and convert new listeners.

Track Name: Unpromise
Like the sad sweet song of the whippoorwill
I feel it coming on like a winter chill
It’s what you can’t unpromise
It’s what you can’t unsay
It’s what you can’t take back
And what you cannot change
And all the dear departed who have gone before
And all the broken-hearted wearing out that floor
From what you can’t unpromise
And what you can’t unsay
And what you can’t take back
And what you cannot change
And like a dog-eared novel, you’re my favourite tale
I’m going to set my feet down on that homeward trail
I’m going to make that promise
I’m going to take that vow
I’m going to change my ways and get you back somehow
Track Name: Finer Things
If I had your love, I’d be taking my time
I’d learn each word, I’d learn each line
I would sing the songs that would make you sing
We’d sing about love and the finer things
We’d sing about love and the finer things
And if I held your hand, we’d go side-by-side
Spending our days by the river side
We would find the shade of an old oak tree
And dream about love and the finer things
We’d dream about love and the finer things
For all the road you’ve left behind you
There are highways up ahead
For all the days I spend without you
There are nights lying in your bed
And if I held your hand, we’d go side-by-side
Spending our days by the river side
We would find the shade of a sycamore tree
And dream about love and the finer things
We’d dream about love and the finer things
Track Name: The Last Heart
How do you wait for something, something that’s never coming?
Hide out by the window or lie down by the door?
And how do you stop from falling?
How do you start from stalling?
Picking up the pieces that are scattered on the floor
Because it all comes down, all comes down
To how you hit the ground
And what’s that sound, what’s that sound?
It must be the last heart that’s breaking
Must be the last heart that’s breaking
And how do you keep from going
Out of your mind not knowing
Whether it’s the last time or the start of something more?
And how do you stop from falling?
How do you walk from crawling?
Steady up and stand tall, and learn to live again?
Because it all comes down, all comes down
To how you hit the ground
And what’s that sound, what’s that sound?
It must be the last heart that’s breaking
Must be the last heart that’s breaking
Track Name: Sugar Skull
Spend my money on a roll of thunder
Spend my money on a Coupe de Ville
Spend my money on a tattooed honey
Decorated with a sugar skull
Decorated with a sugar skull
Spend my time with a Mona Lisa
Spend my time with a China Doll
Spend my time with a Sweet Maria
Decorated with a sugar skull
Decorated with a sugar skull
Left my baby like a roll of thunder
Left my baby in a mobile home
Left my baby in a hacienda
Decorated with a sugar skull
Decorated with a sugar skull
Track Name: Before We Go Home
Let’s dance a little longer, sing a little stronger
Laugh a little louder, till it’s time to go home
Let’s dream like we were younger, so full of fire and hunger
With every world to conquer, till it’s time to go home
Before we go home, before we go home
Let’s reach a little higher, let’s burn a little brighter
Let’s kiss a little sweeter, and hold hands with every finger
Let every moment linger, till it’s time to go home
Before we go home, before we go home
Let’s reach a little higher, let’s burn a little brighter
Let’s sing a little stronger, let’s dance a little longer
Let’s live the life we’re living, and give thanks for what we’re given
And savour every feeling, till it’s time to go home
Track Name: Burn You Alive
Baby, don’t lie: does your body miss me?
Dream of all my kisses at night
Yeah, what do you dream when the cold night grips you?
Feel it coming on like a fire
Oh, but I’m going to burn you alive
Until you’re hotter than the heat of the sun
Yeah with all my kisses, I’m going to burn you alive
What do you need when you feel so alone?
Honey, are you fit to be tied?
Feel me strike like a flint to a stone
Sparking you up in the night
Oh, but I’m going to burn you alive
Until you’re hotter than the heat of the sun
Yeah with all my kisses, I’m going to burn you alive
Track Name: Believe/Belong
Of all the roads that I have traveled, how did I get here?
Living underneath the shadows of my every fear
And say what you want, my darling, we’ve made our own beds
Still nothing can stop this fire burning in my head.
I wanted to believe, I wanted to belong
I wanted to know just which side I’m on
I wanted to believe, I wanted to belong
I wanted to know just which side I’m on
An eye for an eye, my darling, a tooth for a tooth
Of all the things that I could hope for, how did I get you?
You take what you want, my darling. You pull me apart.
Still nothing can stop this fire, burning in my heart.
I wanted to believe, I wanted to belong
I wanted to know just which side I’m on
I wanted to believe, I wanted to belong
I wanted to know just which side I’m on
Track Name: Radio Dial
Back to the way in, back to my white heart
Crack like a pistol back to the start
I caught the signal and I tuned the station
They draw a straight line back to the start
On the radio dial
I know the note bends, I know the breakdown
They're just like old friends from oh so long ago
Forgotten voices, they find their way in
They draw a straight line back to the start
On the radio dial
Dial in, dial in
Track Name: Lucia
Late one cooling winter afternoon
Something caught a glimmer of the moon
Lock your doors and step back from the shades
Lock your doors and step back from the shades
‘Cause everyone's convinced that there's a devil in this town
And no one's slept a wink ever since the children found
Lucia at the bottom of the well
She was such a pretty little thing
A pretty bird who never got to sing
A diamond that will never get to shine
A diamond that will never get to shine
‘Cause everyone's convinced that there's a devil in this town
And no one's slept a wink ever since the children found
Lucia at the bottom of the well
Track Name: Rubies, Diamonds and Pearls
Rubies, diamonds and pearls
And all of the wealth of the world
It don't mean a thing if your heart doesn't sing
From the love of a beautiful girl
Those rubies, diamonds and pearls
My woman, her eyes how they shine
Bright as the stars in the sky
So tender a kiss, the taste of her lips
Is sweet as the fruit of the vine
My woman, her eyes how they shine
And holding her hand I'm stronger than I'll ever be
Her arm on my arm, it feels like we're living the dream
Rubies, diamonds and pearls
And all of the wealth of the world
It don't mean a thing if your heart doesn't sing
From the love of a beautiful girl
Those rubies, diamonds and pearls
