I got a good heart, I got a bad hand I got a weight hanging round of my neck It’s what I’m loving, it’s what I’m leaving It’s what I know and I don’t know yet I walk a straight line but I’m drifting I want to roam but my path ain’t set It’s never easy, it’s never easy It’s never easy to take the first step Oh that river, cold black river of sin Oh that river, cold black river of sin I talk a good talk but I don’t listen I got an ace hidden under my deck I want to love you, I want to leave you I want to go but I ain’t gone yet I walk a straight line but I’m drifting I got caught in a river of sin I got it coming, I got it coming I got it coming but I don’t know when Oh that river, cold black river of sin Oh that river, cold black river of sin Oh that river, drowning in a river of sin Oh that river, cold black river of sin

Were you betting on love, or betting on tears, Or betting on the two combined? And I left you but who left who behind? ‘Cause when the radio plays forgotten songs Like “Living on Tulsa Time” It breaks my heart and pulls you through my mind And every step I take, I run I run to you And every step I take, I run I run to you We could be fooling ourselves But we both know the truth ‘Cause every step I take I run right back to you I could cool my head and make my bed With women, weed, and wine Or find a lost cause to keep me all warm at night But when the last call comes And the jukebox hums “Georgia on my Mind” I’ll be down in the phone booth Getting you on the line And every step I take, I run I run to you And every step I take, I run I run to you We could be fooling ourselves But we both know the truth ‘Cause every step I take I run right back to you

Curtains 02:18
Don’t get while the getting’s good to get I know you’ve got some fight left in you yet It might get pretty dark before the dawn It doesn’t mean a storm is coming on When the morning starts to surface, yeah Baby, draw the curtains down Show me where you’re hurting And I’ll kiss away, I’ll kiss away your fear Sometimes what we need and what we want Is feeling pretty far from what we’ve got And sometimes where we land is surely not Where we thought we’d end up when we start When the morning starts to surface, yeah Baby, draw the curtains down Show me where you’re hurting And I’ll kiss away, I’ll kiss away your fear

All our eyes are looking up Our faces golden like the sun Let your light fill my cup This table is set for everyone Oh, let’s go down, down to the river Wash our hands, tired of dirty living Raise your voice, all is forgiven Let’s go down, down to the river I said Let’s go down, down to the river, yeah A bright white light will guide us all And on the dirty banks We’ll sleep just where we fall Shake that tambourine and beat that drum Let’s sing our songs till every song is sung Oh, let’s go down, down to the river Wash our hands, tired of dirty living Raise your voice, all is forgiven Let’s go down, down to the river I said Let’s go down, down to the river, yeah

Well there’s no use fighting When the fish are biting Better hook your bait and wet your line And you get a funny feeling From the looks she’s stealing You won’t be feeling lonely very long ‘Cause we all want in And we all want out of love And you might feel better If you write that letter But you might regret it when it’s done ‘Cause her eyes get turning to Two cigarettes burning And burn a little hole into your heart ‘Cause we all want in And we all want out of love And we all want in and we all want out No reason for it But the seasons of the heart

All Roads 03:29
Dawn ignites another lonely sky And morning scratches up the night Till it’s purple as a bruise and red just like your eyes And I’m hollowed out and I’m burrowed through Full of nothing but the blues Dreaming of the day I can be back by your side ‘Cause every highway shines like a silver seam A line connecting you to me All roads lead to you And in the burning heart of a great sunset I taste your name on every breath And night it comes, but it never comes too soon ‘Cause you’re in the glow of every moon Lying with me in my motel room And night it comes, but it never comes too soon ‘Cause every highway shines like a silver seam A line connecting you to me All roads lead to you And when I roll the dial or turn the page I see your smile, I see your face All roads lead to you

Oh My Lover 03:05
Oh my lover, all our troubles all lie up ahead And oh how it turns, oh how it tumbles Oh how the river bends And you’ve got yourself getting caught In all those ebbs and flows But oh my lover, oh how the river goes. Your tide it drew me, waves crashed through me Everything left for dead And oh my lover, all our troubles Are swimming right through my head And you’ve got yourself changing course You’re changing banks and beds But oh my lover, oh how the river bends. And you’ve got yourself getting caught In all those ebbs and flows But oh my lover, oh how the river Oh my lover, oh how the river Oh my lover, oh how the river goes.

Rosalyn 01:54
Rosalyn, Rosalyn, I am filthy with the sin It is heavy on my heart And like a burn upon my skin I am standing at your door But still you will not let me in Let me in, my Rosalyn, my Rosalyn Baby please, baby please I don’t like you taking sides I am sorry that I killed him I ain’t sorry that he died Well, you can’t jump in the ocean And not expect a tide Let me in, my Rosalyn, my Rosalyn I woke up on the rumble strip I was dreaming of your smile I was counting off the tears As I was counting off the miles Well, I can’t say where I’m going And I can’t say where I’ve been But let me in, my Rosalyn, my Rosalyn
10.
I had a few lost weekends and misplaced a year How the good times unravel and soon disappear I got wrinkles from smiling but they’ve filled up with tears When I left you I lost you for good Now we see and we saw and we circle around All the lines we have drawn, all the feet we’ve put down Threw our dreams in the well but our dreams they all drowned And they’ll haunt us the rest of our days You said come back, don’t come back Come back, don’t come back Come back, but don’t come back expecting me here Your eyes were cold fire as we stood by the door Where a stumble of boxes covered the floor You said take what you want, I can’t take any more ‘Cause my heart is so full of this pain You said come back, don’t come back Come back, don’t come back Come back, but don’t come back expecting me here

My Kind 02:25
This town don’t know me but it knows my kind It’s why I’m laying low This town don’t know me but it knows my kind It’s why I’m laying low Waiting on a sign, waiting on the wind For the night to pull me in And God don’t love me like he did back then When I was just a child God don’t love me like he did back then When I was just a child Waiting on a sign, waiting on the wind For the night to pull me in And my heart it burns like wood When I dream of something good It don’t turn out like it should It don’t turn out like it should All our days are numbered now And I am counting down All our days are numbered now And I’m just counting down Waiting on a sign, waiting on the wind For the night to pull me in

about

For Sleepy Driver’s singer/songwriter Peter Hicks, most songs begin on an acoustic guitar. He usually has one handy because songs don’t happen on a schedule, often arriving at the most inconsiderate times. They can keep him up at night, or taunt him through the day with random melodies, lines, or phrases. The guitar helps Hicks to subdue a song, to get it out of his system, make room for the next.

When time came to lay down the bed-tracks for what would be the follow-up to their award-winning “In A Low Dark Light” (2012), the acoustic guitar was there. After Hicks poured a foundation of guitar and vocals, the band followed on to add meat to the bone. But while the bulk of the songs have an acoustic guitar at their core, Ignatius is far from a light album. Opening track “I Know You Know I Know” sets an ominous tone, and in true Sleepy fashion, the songs circle dark territory with cautious optimism: tales of love, loss, and things gone wrong, hard times tinted by glimmers of hope.

“Ignatius” is also a departure album for Sleepy Driver. With the exception of a few tracks, the band hadn’t heard Hicks’ tunes before sessions started. Often it was plug and play. Some takes on the album are in fact the first ones: the tape rolled and instruments were played, capturing impulse and spontaneity, gut reactions and raw energy. Band members John Heinstein, Dave Palmer, Barry Hughes, Mike Hatheway and Ethan Young-Lai all bring their best, whether adding grit to the swampy rocker “Down to the River” or the last-call roadhouse sway of “Come Back (Don’t Come Back)”.
